The Charming Mystique of the Historic District
The Village of Arlington Heights has a rich history. The Village was first settled by William Dunton in 1836. Originally Arlington Heights was called the Village of Dunton. In 1845 William Dunton (first resident) built a frame house on the open prairie.
In 1849 the First school building was built on the Northwest corner of Miner and Evergreen.
In 1853 William Dunton sold a strip of land to the Wisconsin Railroad for $350.
Beginning in 1854 a railroad was constructed from Chicago to the Village of Dunton. With the advent of the railroad, Dunton or Arlington Heights went on a growing spree that has continued to this day. In 1880 the village had 950 residents. Today the population is close to topping 80,000 residents.
